The Poll 'Who should the Herd Name go under?' means who should have the right to the herd name when the foal is a Build-a-foal.
Should the owner who owns the stallion and mare or
should the 'leaser' of the mare who choose the mare and stallion.
The Herd Name idea was taken after Canadian Horse breeders
See: Canadian Horse Breeders
I thought it was a good way to tell who each horse was bred by.
Like:
Ashdream's going to center on Bay base Cob type horses
wile you:
Might be breeding for a colorful Lippizaner
People will be able to tell the difference by the herd name, they'll know that horses from Ashdream has a more Cobby style horse.
A herd name can be almost anything from the name of your farm to your last name or you can make something up. My herd name is Ashdream, it is a mix of the first part of my name and my 'dream' to raise horses(Lol ).
If you use your farm name it is best to use initials because 'Dreaming Fast Farm Leo Lee Babe' is just too long but you can use 'DFF Leo Lee Babe' or 'DreamingFast Leo Lee Babe' and everyone will still know its you because no two herd names can be the same.
If you have a name or set of initials you are wanting to use but are not sure if its taken just ask.
Also we advise if you rescue or plan to rescue horses it's best to have a herd name ready incase one of you mares pop up pregnant.
Choose carefully because this is the name we will know YOU by and it will stay with your foals forever.

"Canadian Horse breeders register a herd name with the Canadian Horse Breeders Association to use when naming all foals born to mares they own or lease. This herd name must be unique as it identifies your breeding program from all other breeders of Canadian horses. This herd name may be your farm name, your last name or any unique name that has not already been registered. This name can also be a compound name. The same herd name in two horse’s name does not necessarily mean that both horses are related to each other, for example: “Maple Lane Thomy Ellie” and “Maple Lane Duc Athena” are not related at all, but “Maple Lane” (herd name) means that both dams were owned or leased by the same individual/farm at the time they were bred."
